This year, The Power of Words is the keynote event for The Big Read, providing an additional perspective on the themes of our community read and discussion of family and racism, and the personal experience of growing up in a biracial or multicultural family.

A mesmerizing and evocative storyteller, Ford’s work explores the themes of family, racism, and love and loss with poignant, heartfelt prose. Ford discusses his novels, including Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, and his experiences as a biracial Chinese American growing up in a multi-cultural family. Ford's newest work, Love and Other Consolation Prizes will be released in September. It is a powerful novel, inspired by a true story, about a boy whose life is transformed at Seattle’s epic 1909 World’s Fair. Ford's books are available for check out at Monroe County Public Library.

Immigrants and the Power of Words
Elizabeth Gray will provide a look at the history of immigrant fiction in American literature and how it shapes our culture, as well as a discussion on the portrayal of immigrants in Jamie Ford’s Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and Celeste Ng’s Everything I Never Told You. Ellen Wu will continue with her lecture, The Great American Melting Pot: Myth or Reality? This session explores the various ways that Americans and newcomers through the ages have treated migration as both a problem and a solution. The aim is to provide historical context that will deepen our understanding of today’s hot-button immigrant debate. The class will meet November 2, 9, and 17, and the cost is $65 including your ticket to the author reception and reserved seating at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. This class offers Indiana librarians professional credits through the State Library.
